The Monroe Thunder coming off a successful spring season entered the Hopewell Valley tournament for the first time.  The tournament was very competitive as we played 3 flight 3 and higher teams.  The boys played very well and every game was very competitive.  They really had to bring their "A" game to every game to come out on top.  It was a very enjoyable tournament and the boys did very well.  We finished in second place at 2-1-1, losing only to the first place team that went 3-1 in the tournament.  I thought the boys played hard and played smart, it was probably the best weekend of soccer we had ever.  It ended on a great note, as we were able to get together for our annual team party on Sunday after the tournament.  We were only one penalty kick from coming in first place.

Game 1 Saturday - Loss 2-1 vs German American Kickers (Record 0-1-0)

In the first game on Saturday, we started out with only 11 players and we had players playing out of position as there were 4 players late to the game.  It was unfortunate that we played the eventual first place team right out of the gates.  Our team had to hold down the fort for about 20 minutes before we finally got our full team.  The boys held out for a 1-0 deficit until the last minute of the first half, when we received a penalty inside the penalty box in which Ryan W converted into a 1-1 tie.  In the second half, we gave up another goal to go down 2-1.  In the final minutes, we had 2 opportunites to score a penalty kick.  The first penalty kick Ryan Ward sent over the top and the second penalty kick was a great save by the opposing goalie.  In fact, the other goalie was exceptional and made several great saves throughout the game.  I thought GAK was the better team, but we had a few opportunities to convert.  Overall a tough 2-1 loss, but a well played game and I was happy with the effort by the team.  MVP Pin: Tyler MacDonald

Game 2 Saturday - Win 3-0 vs Crusa Legacy (Record 1-1-0)

In the second game on Saturday, we started out with a full team.  The team played hard and strong.  We had several opportunities to score in the first half and we were able to convert on one opportunity.  We went into the half with a 1-0 lead.  In the second half, we increased the lead to 3-0 and coasted to nice victory to even up our record for the tournament.  David Sorrentino scored on a beautiful shot from outside the 18.  Ryan S made a nice pass to Tyler MacDonald for another goal.  Ryan Ward scored the third goal.  The tournament game MVP pin went to Ryan Ward.

Game 3 Sunday - Win 2-1 vs Hopewell Valley (Record 2-1-0)

In the very early game on Sunday, the Thunder came out rolling as we scored to take an early 1-0 lead.  Hopewell Valley scored later in the half to tie the game 1-1.  In the second half Ryan Ward scored off of a nice pass from Ryan McCabe for the game winner.  It was a very close hard fought game.  Drew Montalto received the MVP Pin.

Game 4 Sunday - Tie 2-2 vs Greater Flemington (Record 2-1-1)

The fourth game was the Thunder’s toughest of the tournament.  The Thunder played a flawless first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.  Early in the second half, we scored a 2nd goal to take a 2-0 lead.  Ethan made a beautiful breakaway save to preserve the shutout.  After giving up a corner kick goal to cut the lead in half, Greater Flemington scored again to tie the game.  Overall it was a very competitive game and the boys played really hard.  Drew Montalto received the MVP Pin.
