Congratulations to the Monroe Thunder on their 2nd place finish
Game 1 vs BOM PAL Venom - Won 2-0
Game 1 was a tight game as it was the first time all season that the Thunder played on grass. It was a sloppy game in the first half and we couldn’t get anything really going in the first half. We ended the half tied 0-0 and down David Anderson who broke his toe after making a comeback from off-season surgery. We all felt for David and we wanted to give him a victory in the tournament. It was great that we were able to put together two goals and hang on for a victory.
Shawn Gardini got us going with an unbelievable shot from left wing about 22 yards away from the goal. Shawn launched the ball across the goal and into the far post netting, it was probably Shawns best shot of his career and it was a really nice goal. The second goal was scored by Ryan Ward on a nice give and go play.
The defense and the goalies played a pretty solid game, we were a little off in the middle as our traps and passing were not spot on. Overall it was a good victory and moved us into the final round.
I thought Drew, Brandon, Ryan W, and both Ryan S and Ethan played very well in goal.
Game 2 vs Manalapan - Lost 3-2
I thought that we played hard and we controlled most of the game, we had leads of 1-0 in the first half and 2-1 in the second half and we couldn’t hold them. Eventually we allowed one player to score 3 goals and we lost a heartbreaker 3-2 to an evenly matched Manalapan team. I thought we played hard, we just had several mental lapses by the defense which cost us our goals. It was unfortunate, but we did play hard.
I thought Drew played an amazing game, he played hard and aggressive the whole game! Unfortunately, I mistook his hand signals in the first half and pulled him out thinking he was tired. We then immediately gave up a tieing goal at the end of the first half. Ethan made an amazing save on a breakaway attempt to keep the score tied 1-1 at the half. In the first half, Shawn G scored on a nice crossing pass to give us an early 1-0 lead.
In the second half, we quickly took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Ryan W. About halfway through the second half, we had a mental breakdown on the left side and middle of our defense allowing a breakway goal to be scored as the player made a nice floating shot over Ryan S’s head. In the final 10 minutes, we missed coverage in the middle of the field and allowed 2 open players down the middle of the field to score a breakaway goal to take a lead of 3-2.
We mounted several runs in the second half, but their goalie made a couple of saves and we were never able to get the game tieing goal. We ended the tournament in second place with a 1-1 record. Both Shawn and Ryan W scored two goals a piece. I thought Drew played extremely aggressive during the game.
